High-Resolution Aerial Imagery Captured, Interpreted and Reported by an Experienced Ecologist
ESNZ now provides professional drone-assisted ecological surveys and high-resolution aerial imagery throughout Auckland, Waikato and surrounding regions.
Drone imagery provides a detailed and up-to-date record of vegetation, wetlands, waterways, pest plants, restoration areas and current site conditions. This is particularly valuable where publicly available satellite or aerial imagery is outdated, unclear, or does not accurately reflect recent changes to a property.
All ecological imagery is reviewed and interpreted by an experienced ecologist and can be incorporated into ecological assessments, restoration plans, weed management plans, monitoring reports and resource consent documentation.
Our team provides expert assessments addressing issues such as root disturbance, disease, pest impacts, and construction-related stress. These services are often required to support resource consent applications, inform vegetation removal decisions, or meet consent conditions under the Resource Management Act (RMA) and local planning provisions, including the Auckland Unitary Plan.
Aerial survey is most useful where a site is large, difficult to access, or where recent change needs to be documented accurately. Common situations include:
Aerial photography on its own has limited value in an ecological or planning context. The value lies in knowing what the imagery shows and how it should be described in a report.
Every survey we undertake is planned, flown and interpreted with the ecological outcome in mind. Vegetation and habitat units identified from the air are ground-truthed during the site inspection, and findings are written up in a form that supports resource consent applications, consent conditions and Council reporting under the Resource Management Act 1991 and relevant planning provisions, including the Auckland Unitary Plan.
Because the same ecologist captures, interprets and reports on the imagery, the mapping aligns directly with the ecological assessment rather than sitting alongside it as a separate product.
01 — Scope and Flight Planning We confirm the site boundaries, survey objectives and reporting requirements, then check airspace, access, weather and any Civil Aviation constraints before scheduling the flight.
02 — Aerial Capture and Ground-Truthing The site is flown to capture high-resolution imagery, with a concurrent ecological site inspection to verify vegetation units, habitat types and pest plant infestations observed from the air.
03 — Mapping, Interpretation and Reporting Imagery is processed, vegetation and habitat units are mapped and annotated, and the outputs are supplied as standalone figures or incorporated directly into your ecological assessment, management plan or monitoring report.
Drone-derived boundaries and measurements are approximate unless otherwise specified. Drone ecological mapping does not replace cadastral surveying, licensed boundary identification or engineering survey work.
